Colonia Güell

In its day, Colonia Guell was a pioneeering idea by industrialist Eusebi Guell, to improve the quality of life for the workers and their families who toiled in his mills. Driven by the unrest, sweeping through the industrial heart of Barcelona, Guell decided to move his entire operation out of the city.

His concept was to create an ‘industrial village’, centred around the mill, with lots of amenities for his workers and their families. He brought in some of the leading ‘modernista’ architects and set about bringing his idea to life.

The result is staggering and to the workers of the time, it must have seemed like another world compared to the slums of the city they were used to. Terraced houses, a theatre, a school, shops, gardens and a Gaudi designed and built church.

Gaudi was heavily influenced by nature and coming out here you can finally experience one of his buildings in its original setting, not swallowed up by urbanisation

Of course the ‘Gaudi Crypt’ is the main draw today, but strolling around the site you can enjoy more than 20 unique buildings in the ‘modernise’ style.

Top Tip

Plan plenty of time, there really is so much more to see than just the Crypt, amazing as it is.
